Losing Sight of Shore
We have Movie Sunday at our house every month on the 2nd Sunday, at 3:00pm. We open it up to the community, neighbors, and strangers. There is always a great discussion afterwards about the movie – some principle or lesson that it brought to light.
This month’s movie is “Losing Sight Of Shore”, a documentary about the extraordinary journey of four brave women known as the Coxless Crew that set out to row the Pacific Ocean from America to Australia unsupported. As they row over 8,000 miles during their nine months at sea, they face extreme mental and physical challenges they must overcome in order to go down in history. This is a story of perseverance, friendship, and the power of the human spirit.
Everyone has a Pacific to cross.
In watching the movie, I realized that it is scary for me to lose sight of shore. Literally. I love water, but not when I am surrounded by it. Land is more my thing… rocks in with the waterfalls and streams. And metaphorically, I like to be tethered to a “shore” of safety, certainty, and sometimes mediocrity.
The story brings hope that with persistence and determination, any “Pacific” can be conquered.
The journey of the Coxless Crew is truly a symbol for the Pacifics we all cross in our lives everyday. Whether it’s overcoming an illness, writing a book, standing up for yourself, or in fact a physical challenge similar to the row, know that you too can find the inner strength to lose sight of shore.
We want to hear about the “Pacific” you are crossing, or have crossed. Comment below and share your losing sight of shore story, if you choose.
