Spirit Game: Pride Of A Nation
I just return from the Parliament of World’s Religions in Toronto Canada. My heart was uplifted particularly by the Indigenous Elders from the Iroquois 6 Nations (or Haudenosaunee) who held ceremonies, taught their wisdom, and screened this movie, Spirit Game: Pride Of A Nation.
As the film states, “Lacrosse originated with the Iroquois, which they call their ‘medicine game,’ and is the lifeblood of their Nation. The Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team is not only among the world’s best, but ambassadors for their Nation’s sovereignty and recognition. In 2015, the Iroquois hosted the World Championships on Native soil for the first time ever, in which history, politics and culture all collided on the playing field before the eyes of the world.”

When I was at the Parliament, I asked Elder Oren Lyons who was there, “What do you want to come out of this movie?” He replied, “I want to teach people (white people, like me, is what he meant) about the Doctrine of Discovery, so that we can get it abolished.”
Every month my husband and I screen a movie for our neighbors and friends. November’s movie was Spirit Game. We had a lively discussion afterwards – a lot of it about the Doctrine of Discovery. Do you know about this? How do YOU feel about this Doctrine?

Essentially, the Pope in 1452 gave Christian explorers the right to claim land from indigenous peoples, because these native peoples were not Christian, and therefore the land was uninhabited/empty. Governments since (including USA Supreme Court) have used this international law to justify the taking of lands, breaking treaties, and killing people.
